Ok, looks like we all have to take a stand on this issue, so i'll take mine.
Wasnt really paying attention to the whole AI issue, but as Artstation is a plataform i check daily, i can't play dumb and pretend i'm not aware. I'm just a beginner learning how to draw and paint, i'm not a pro or a big art influencer (in fact, i don't even think of myself as an artist, just a drawer/painter), i've never been on the trending tab of Artstation, and most likely my artworks are not even on those huge databases that feed the AI.
But i feel part of a community, a community that spans the whole history of mankind since we were living in caverns, every culture that has ever lived on this planet has communicated through art, it´s a heritage and a lineage that comes until today.
And i think that if it´s meaningful, it´s because it´s not easy, it comes with a struggle and effort, having the urge to communicate, but not having the vocabulary yet to do it. That´s why babies cry. That struggle we all know in this community, be it Kim Jung Gi, bless him, or a nobody like myself.
Now there´s an engine that by feeding (may i say predating) on billions of references, can churn out images by request, with crazy detail, or even mimicking the style of other artists. It is said that the AI “learns”, as artists do, but what we learn is a process, what the AI learn is a result. It´s also said that artists have always taken inspiration from other artists, made countless fanarts, studies, copies etc, just as the AI does. Yes we do, me first. But a lot of artists asking for their artworks to not be included on those AI databases have encouraged fellow artists to do it, even guesting DTIYS challenges. Because they all know the struggle. And the AI don´t.
In the end it´s all about respect, i´m sure there´s plenty of people excited about this new technology, and willing to feed the machine with their artworks to see what comes out, but if other are not comfortable with it, you have to respect that. I´m sure i wouldn´t be comfortable about the AI adding my artworks to its almost infinite pit of references, but would be honored and beyond flattered if someone told me that he would try to replicate any of it, be if for fun, learning, or because he was inspired. I guess i´m partial, but what can i do, i´m on Team Human lol.
